If I asked you to take away one thing from review of Eeny Meeny after reading it, I would hope would be that I enjoyed how sick and twisted it was. The same goes for Fixed in Blood. It wasn’t your typical murder read, this one was far more than that.

The book’s synopsis is what piqued my interest, as it’s not your typical murder. All the murder books I’ve read usually involve a gun or knife, whereas this one has to do with a poisonous gas in a subway car. Pretty original if you ask me.
The first 25% of the book seemed interesting. Then the next 50% was really dull. Then for the final 25% it picked up again. Even though the final 25% was decent, overall still felt “meh” to me.

Hair of the Dog is the third novel in the Dan Mahoney series by author Susan Slater. Dan is an investigator for the insurance company United Life and Casualty. This time around he’s sent to Florida, where five racing greyhounds, all heavily insured, were lost in a fire – not to mention an employee was found dead in a pool of blood with the word “thief” carved on his forehead, too. While everything initially seems to be nothing but dead ends for Dan, over time pieces of the puzzle come to light.

Although I began this series out of order, starting with the second book, it doesn’t matter too much. The novels are standalone, aside from the fact that since this is the first story, it details how and why Frank Pavlicek went from being a cop to being a police officer. Quite the interesting backstory.

The summer months are now here, and along with that comes a slew of many book publications. If you’re a fan of mystery, High Country Nocturne is one you don’t want to miss out on. This novel has it all: jewel thiefs, mobsters, a hitwoman, corrupt cops, the FBI, you name it. Add in the Arizona setting and there’s a lot of ground that David Mapstone has to cover in order to solve this mystery.

I haven’t read many psychological thrillers, but The Bones of You caught my eye so I figured I’d give it a shot. I’m glad I did. In this novel an eighteen year old girl named Rosie goes missing, then several days later she’s found dead in the woods, stabbed and beaten. There are a couple suspects, Rosie’s secret boyfriend and her father, however there is not enough incriminating evidence to have them charged with the murder of Rosie.

Brash Books claim to publish the best crime novels in existence, and I’m beginning to agree with them. Of the three novels I’ve read from them so far, two of them I’ve given a five star rating. A Killing Sky is five star material to me. The story is the second in a series that follows ex-cop now turned private investigator Frank Pavlicek. This time he’s hired by the daughter of a Virginia Congressman to find her missing twin sister, as she went missing after saying she was going to drive over to her boyfriend’s dorm and break up with him. With only a few leads to pursue, such as a seemingly unrelated hit-and-run that occurred 20 years ago, it’s up to Frank to find the missing twin before it’s too late.

I thought I was going to really enjoy Longmire, but the book never pulled me in. I love the geographical setting (the midwest is an awesome place) and the writing flow was superb. The characters are all unique and I like the small touch of historical fiction the book encompasses, but even with all those great aspects in the book I never felt immersed in the story. It never really drew me in. I enjoyed it enough that I could easily finish the book, but I just never found it all that interesting. The book didn’t have as much action or excitement in the plot as I was hoping for, so it just really fell flat.
